Sash - Mestizo dancer’s costume

Mestizo is the name for a culture that developed on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. The people are of mixed Mayan and Spanish heritage who arrived during the Spanish colonial period. In 1847, fleeing La Guerra de Castas (the Caste War) as refugees, a very large Mestizo population crossed into Belize and settled, refusing to be British subjects.

Acquired by the donor before 1875.
