Magic Lantern Slide: The Pilgrims ascend the Hill under escort

The Pilgrim’s Progress was written in 1678 and was very popular in Victorian England for its Christian message. The slides were shown while a narrator told the story, often using a printed script. This version comprises both hand-drawn images of scenes from the story, and hand-coloured photographs of costumed actors.
