Magic Lantern Slide: A Devonshire scythe stone cutter
This image by William Weaver Baker shows a gentleman sat holding a scythe stone on his lap. Scythe stones were used to sharpen the blades of scythes. The hand written caption states the man in the image is a Devonshire scythe stone cutter. This makes the location of the image likely to be a quarry or mine in Blackborough where sandstone Devonshire Batt scythe stones were made. Weaver Baker generally produced images of buildings and objects in Exeter, this photograph shows he also went further afield to capture areas of interest.
