Magic Lantern Slide: Shakespear's Birthplace, Stratford on Avon

This image by William Weaver Baker shows Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon- Avon. The house was largely restored in 1858, undoing the brick refronting that had taken place sometime around 1800. In front of the house on Henley Street are a few bikes with tourists looking at the building. These all demonstrate the Victorian interest in Shakespeare continued into the twentieth century. Weaver Baker was better known for taking photos of objects and buildings in Exeter, but this appears as one of several images in Stratford showing his interest in architecture.
