Magic Lantern Slide: Monmow Bridge, Monmouth

This slide by William Weaver Baker shows Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, Wales, which Weaver Baker wrongly named ‘Monmow’ Bridge. The gatehouse on the bridge originally formed part of the town defences. It was built in 1297 and is a rare survival of a medieval fortified bridge. Whilst no exact date is given, this photograph was produced after extensive conservation was undertaken between 1889-1902 to help stabilise the building. Weaver Baker often took photographs of objects and buildings in Exeter, but also seems to have taken photographs of architectural features elsewhere.
