Sampler

This sampler is around 300 years old. Miss Lock gave it to the museum in 1869; it previously belonged to a Miss Smith of Salway Place, St Sidwell in Exeter. A band sampler is very portable, easily rolled up and taken out to continue the work anywhere. In the 16th and 17th centuries ‘examplers’ recorded samples of different stitches and motifs that could be referred to for other embroidery projects. During the 18th and 19th centuries samplers were made by young girls learning to sew at home and at school. They became a standard part of education for girls of all classes.
