Stool

An Akan stool, which was made in Ghana but acquired in Lagos, Nigeria. This was bequeathed by Dr. Paul Oliver.

This stool is carved from a single block of wood. Beneath the curved seat is the depiction of a man on his hands and knees above a serpent.

On one side is written “ohin Nebuchadnezzar” and on the other “stool maker Yawson No.1”. An unusual style depicting the story of Nebuchadnezzar II who was punished by God for failing to acknowledge him.

The stool is an example of 20th century tourist art, but such items were also made available locally to those who can afford to buy it.

Length = 768mm;.Height = 605.4mm
