Magic Lantern Slide: Newt (floating)
Alfred Rowden was a keen amateur photographer and natural historian in Exeter. He often gave talks at local field clubs, illustrated with magic lantern slides that he created or purchased from commercial manufacturers. This photograph has been staged in his home, with a newt placed in a tank of water in front of a carefully lit background, to record behaviour that would be impossible to photograph in the wild.
