Magic Lantern Slide: Group of men and boys with benches
This photograph by Alfred Oliver Rowden shows boys standing next to a group of wooden benches which men would sit on whilst smoking hookah or water pipes. Rowden has another photograph in his collection which shows these benches in use (see slide 45/1960/95/903). It is unclear why these benches are outside, perhaps this was where they were manufactured. Rowden was in Mesopotamia during the First World War and was not sent home until 1919 or 1920. He photographed daily scenes like this to record his experiences.
