Quizzing glass

This glass has a gilt metal surround and the cord is made of hair giving it a rough texture. The hook at the end is for attaching to the wearer’s clothing, either a pocket or button hole. It is a magnifying glass but has other connotations. The term ‘quizzing glass’ comes from the fashion for quizzing or mocking people by looking them up and down with the glass.
