Ammonite

An Early Jurassic giant ammonite of the Arieties genus. Preserved in chalk, it is possible to see the straight ribs of the ammonite on this fossil. This specimen was collected from Dorset, possibly Portland. Relative sea level had risen, drowning the arid desert plains and marginal seas of Triassic England, creating a permanent shallow shelf-sea between Europe to the north, North America to the west, Africa to the south and the deep Tethys ocean to the east. This area provided a relatively safe haven for marine reptiles and invertebrates (like the ammonites).
