Antefix roof tile

This Roman (43-410 AD) roof tile (antefix) was excavated from the vestibule of the bath-house of a Roman settlement in Twyford Hampshire in 1924-5. I is made of red clay and its function was to decorate and protect the end of the roof ridge; some were decorated with faces to ward off any evil spirits.
It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death.
