Sampler
A ten year old girl stitched this colourful sampler in 1824. It is made of fine wool tammy, embroidered in cross stitch, satin stitch and four sided stitches in silk threads. The stylised bird, tree and plant motifs surround a house and garden, and the work is enclosed in a double border.
Charlotte embroidered her name and the date she finished her sampler in neat cross stitch: ‘Elizabeth Charlotte Hinton her work Aged 10 years December 16th 1824’.
The Christian verse is typical of 19th century samplers:
‘ Jesus hear our humble prayer tender shepherd of thy sheep let thy mercy and thy care all our souls in safety keep/What we each have now been taught let our memories retain may we if we live be brought here to meet in peace again’.
