Nose ring

This turtle-shell nose ring was traditionally worn by senior men of high status. As young boys their noses and ear lobes were drilled and the lobes were plugged, gradually becoming enlarged over time. Nose and ear ornamentation would have been accompanied by shell-beaded armlets and a clam shell chest ornament called tema.
