Sampler

Lydia’s father George was a gardener on the Mamhead estate. Later on, when she was 18, Lydia worked as an assistant teacher at the National School in Exeter. Samplers were an essential part of a girls education. They taught the stitches necessary for marking laundry. Given to RAMM in 1918 by Ellen Hood, Lydia’s younger sister, who also presented her own sampler (1863) and her mother Ruth’s (1817).
