Rosette for the wedding of Edward Prince of Wales, 1863

[Pictured right] This silk rosette is made from three layers of pleated ribbon backed with stiffened tarlatan or book muslin. The streamers are printed with portraits of Prince Albert Edward (later Edward VII) and Princess Alexandra of Denmark beneath the Prince of Wales feathers. The emblem in metal also decorates the centre of the rosette. It was worn by a member of the public on 10th March 1863 in celebration of the royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and carefully kept as a souvenir until it was given to the museum in 1925 by Exeter Alderman John Stocker.

It was the first royal wedding to take place at St. George's Chapel, and the last wedding of a Prince of Wales until Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer's 1981 wedding.
