Sampler
Elizabeth Newton completed this sampler on December 8 1739. The sampler contains two moralising verses as well as the Ten Commandments, reminding its maker of the seven deadly sins as she worked. Most of the letters are embroidered onto the fine linen ground in cross-stitch in red silk thread. A gold thread border is worked around the verses in the shape of the stone tablets that Moses brought from Mount Sinai, as recorded in the Book of Exodus. The tablets are headed by cherubim worked in gold thread, and outlined in black silk. Parts of the sampler have deteriorated, leaving only the metal threads.
