Sampler
Ann Johnson’s sampler, made in 1782, may have been worked at school. Industriousness, obedience and Christian values were seen as important virtues to be cultivated in young girls, who were tested in the laborious working of letters and motifs in counted thread embroideries. Ann threaded her needle with silk strands to work the Lord’s Prayer in cross-stitch on her sampler. A grapevine motif, a popular Christian symbol, borders the alphabet, numerals and prayer. A two line verse reads ‘Virtue alone is Happiness below And all
our Knowledge is ourselves to know’.
our Knowledge is ourselves to know’.
