Old Heavitree Church

‘Old Heavitree Church’ English School, 19th Century. This oil on canvas depicts a study of the church and its graveyard from the ground. A man carrying something over his shoulder is walking through the graves. A woman wearing a bonnet and a man are entering through the gateway on the right.

The old Heavitree church was completely rebuilt in the late-19th Century. The church is of the classic medieval style and has late Saxon origin. As Heavitree expanded during the 19th Century, the church was deemed no longer fit for purpose and replaced.
