Shango stool

This stool probably formed part of the ritual paraphernalia of an altar house dedicated to Ṣango (Shango), the Yoruba oriṣa of thunder and lightning.

A carved wooden seat which is supported by three figures. The central figure is of a horseman, who is flanked by a drummer and a Shango attendant carrying a staff.

Likely acquired between 1895 - 1911. Donated by Mrs. F. P. Pinkett in 1927. Maker is unknown.
