The nkisi (pl. minkisi) protected souls, offered healing, and located the cause of sickness. It was activated by a priest-like nganga. Each one would contain medicine appropriate to the needs of the villager, or the community. Medicine (bilongo) would be contained in the belly and head of the carving. The exact purpose of this figure is unknown.
