Pincushion
A hand-embroidered silk pin-cushion made for a ladies dressing table, which may have belonged to a member of the Courtenay family of Powderham. Pins were used to secure clothing. The scrolling floral motifs worked in silk and gold metal threads are similar to those found on embroidered clothing of the early 17th century. Other motifs of birds and insects are like those still used in raised work later in the century. Tiny metal spangles are dotted about the satin ground. The edges of the cushion are trimmed with a metal braid.
