‘Portrait of James Northcote painting Sir Walter Scott’, attributed to John Cawse, c.1825-1830. The oil on canvas depicts an interior of an artist’s studio: the artist wearing a green coat and red turban is seen right standing with his palette at his easel. He is painting a portrait of the sitter who is seen seated in a red chair left. Beside the sitter a table with papers, book, quill and ink and leaning against it props - a sword, armour breastplate. A cocker spaniel dog is seated in the foreground centre beside a box on which rests a cloth and pair of wire rim glasses. On the studio walls two portraits of women are clearly seen.
