Joseph Sparkes
Joseph Sparkes was the son of Thomas Sparkes who founded the general bank in Exeter in 1792. They were a Quaker family and were active in the movement for the abolition of slavery.
Joseph Sparkes was among a delegation of Exeter men who were present at the Anti-Slavery meeting in London’s Exeter Hall in 1833. The Slavery Abolition act was eventually passed in 1834.
The Sparkes family held the American Quaker William Penn, in high regard, and with his brother Thomas Joseph created the area of Exeter that they named Pennsylvania Park after Pennsylvania in America. They also used Penn’s image on their bank’s pound note.
