Amphora storage vessel

The upper part of an amphora storage vessel. Amphorae were rather like the shipping containers of the Roman world. They were strong pottery vessels which were specially shaped to stack into ships’ holds without rolling around. Bulk goods such as wine or oil were transported to Exeter in amphorae.
