Saxifrage

The Reverend William Keble Martin spent many years of his life collecting, studying and drawing plants. This drawing is a preliminary plate for inclusion in his book The Concise British Flora in Colour published in 1965. It corresponds to plate 32 in the final work.

The plants depicted are purple saxifrage (Saxifragea oppositifolia) drawn from a specimen collected 2200ft up the Clova mountains 19 July 1930, sarry saxifrage (saxifragea stellaris), yellow mountain saxifrage (Saxifragea azoides), rue-leaved saxifrage (Saxifragea tridactylites), golden saxifrage (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium), alternate-leaved golden saxifrage (Chrysosplenium alternifolium), Irish saxifrage (Saxifragea rosacea), mossy saxifrage (Saxifragea hypnoides), Saxifraga caespitosa drawn from a specimen at the Natural History Museum, London, Grass of Parnassus (Parnassia palustris) and Saxifragea hirsuta. RAMM also has his herbarium collection (pressed plants).
