Spindle whorl

Spindle whorls were part of a tool for spinning wool into thread and are found on archaeological sites from prehistory until the recent past. This Iron Age spindle whorl is quite roughly shaped from stone. Two labels are attached to the object, one recording its museum accession number with the initials ‘POH’ of the local antiquarian Peter Orlando Hutchinson. The other label records where and when it was found: ‘Manor House, .... Road, Sidmouth, May 5 1875’.
