Spindle whorl
Spindle whorls were part of a tool for spinning wool into thread and are found on archaeological sites from prehistory until the recent past. This Iron Age spindle whorl is made from stone. Two labels are attached to it, the first recording its museum accession number. The second label states ‘nr Sidmouth, POH, Evans’ Stone Impt D:392’. The initials POH refer to the local antiquarian Peter Orlando Hutchinson who found the object. The reference to Evans is likely referencing work by John Evans, an important archaeologist in prehistoric tools.
