Blue whale

Baleen from a locally caught whale. Records state the following: ‘Found floating dead in the Channel and landed at Teignmouth (Ness Cove) on 11th January 1875’. ‘This specimen measured 50 feet 6 inches in length. It was choked by feeding on sprats and pilchards, its gullet being full of scales. The bones were purchased for £5.10s.0d. Cleaning and removal to Exeter cost £7.10s.0d. Mounting on a stand cost £7.2s.6d. Towards this the E.N.C & A.S. [Exeter Naturalists Club and Archaeological Society] gave £10 and the balance was paid by W.S.M.D’Urban, Curator’.
