Staff
This item was acquired by Lieutenant Bent sometime between 1851-2 on board HMS Vengeance as part of anti-slavery duties in West African waters off Lagos. Although acquired in Lagos, this item has recently been interpreted as a sceptre (or mvwala) from the Kongo (Discovering Worlds: Africa project 2016-18).
This sceptre includes two carved figurative elements. The top part appears to depict a male holding a child. The second element consists of a woman kneeling in supplication.
Its length is 895mm.
