Sandal

Waraji are sandals made from woven rice straw rope. They are attached to the feet by a thong that passes between the first tow toes and then tied around the ankle. Commonly worn by all men and women, waraji were also worn with tabi split-toed socks by samurai and warriors in the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The rice straw offers the feet a firm grip on a varied landscape, even horses shoes were made out of rice straw as they were that effective. Of course this meant that such sandals had a short lifespan and had to be continually mended or replaced.
